Abstract
Sedation monitoring has always been a matter of interest for those working in critical care and surgical units. Using the right dose of anaesthetic has been difficult and different assessment scales were developed to help in making decisions. Nowadays, and thanks to the new technologies, a monitor has been created which, through the analysis of the electroencephalogram of the patient, provides us with a single number (from 1 to 100) that determines the depth or degree of sedation of the patient. This new monitorisation system, known as the "bispectral index" (BIS) has shown its utility in critical patients and in the surgical environment, making it now possible to adjust pharmacological doses to the minimum required to achieve a state of comfort in the patient. In this paper we will review the scientific fundaments of this new monitoring system as well as its components and the way to use it in everyday practice.
