Abstract
Nourishing hospitalised patients represents an important aspect in the integral care of patients. Malnourishment has repercussions on disease progression and can lead to complications. The hospitalised patient suffering from malnourishment runs a higher risk of infection. The concept of immunonourishment is based on the administration of certain nourishing substances expected to have apart from a nourishing effect, a therapeutic effect on the immunological status of the patient. The review of research studies show the existence of nourishing elements with an action on the function of the immunological system and are consequently referred to as "pharmaconoutrients", including glutamine, arginine, nucleotides, fats and antioxidants. The composition of the diet must be done taking into account, among other aspects, the specific disease of the patient. A revision of the diets that are suitable in conditions such as pulmonary disease, renal, neurological, and oncologic conditions, etc. and in critical patients is performed.
