Abstract

Nursing as a profession is a service aimed at satisfying the needs of people. The credibility and recognition of a profession by the citizens is based on the services provided by such profession. The conceptual model of Virginia Henderson allows us to identify what nurses do and to determine how our contribution differs from that provided by other professional groups.

Objective: To identify the type of problems that patients treated by nurses have in the specialties of Internal Medicine and Vascular Surgery.

Material and methods: Descriptive, retrospective study. The sample has been retrieved using all new patients registered into the mentioned specialties during 2000. Data was retrieved using the Zaineri Nursing Data Collection program. The Epidat 2.1 statistical program was used for data analysis.

Results: A statistically significant difference is found amongst percentages in interventions for independent and interdependent problems between the two study groups. A higher percentage of intervention is noted for independent problems in the medical unit and a higher percentage for interdependent problems in the surgical unit.

Conclusions: The differences in both units show that there are differences in the aims to be achieved. The establishment of priorities to maintain the integrity of the individual entails different ways in which to plan the care that will determine the particularity of the unit.
