Abstract

Any formative process must envision a type of self-evaluation aimed at evaluating our own program. It is the so called "formative evaluation". This descriptive, cross study consisting of three cross-sections, was intended to determine how students from the last three promotions (99/00, 00/01 and 01/02) regarded the Community Nursing training classes in Area 7 and also to find out if there were any differences in how these students evaluated these classes, depending on the following variables: promotion, student gender, school of origin, and class group. A further objective of the study was to determine the weaknesses and strengths of how the practical classes were organised. The results showed a high degree of student satisfaction. No significant differences were found amongst students from different promotions. Male student nurses were happier with their rotation shift. Some differences were observed amongst schools, which may be related to the duration of the practical classes and with the possibility of integrating the academic contents. The class group did not appear to have an impact. As strong points of the practical classes system, the following aspects were noted: strong academic preparation of the teaching staff and organisation/orientation of the practicum classes. Aspects that need improvement include team work (in some centres), integration of theory contents, and the limited amount of time allocated for practical classes.
