Abstract
Primary prevention proves most useful in the child population. This is the best time to modify those life styles that are noxious to their health. In the case of children with special needs linked to a mental disability, this prevention becomes especially relevant. The program here depicted was created to cover the orodental hygiene needs of a special education centre. The methodology used for the development and the evaluation criteria of the program are here presented. The acquisition of a brushing habit, the recognition of the parts of the mouth and their functions by younger kids and their own demand to receive a fluoride supplement are established. The integration of the teaching role of the nurse in collaboration with the teachings of other professionals carried out in a school setting is also established.
