Abstract

Objective: to evaluate a moist cure using calcium alginate and hydrocellular dressings in the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers in the Internal Medicine Unit of San Juan de la Cruz de Úbeda hospital.

Methodology: longitudinal, descriptive, prospective study on 31 subjects (with a total of 41 pressure ulcers) admitted to the Unit of Internal Medicine of the San Juan de la Cruz de Úbeda hospital from June to December 2002. Main variables: Baseline pathology, age, localization, degree of severity, and depth of the lesion.

Results: 80,5% of the lesions progressed favorably. A reduction in the degree of severity was noted.

Conclusion: The data obtained support the effectiveness in the application of nursing care in the prevention and evolution of pressure ulcers, using calcium alginate and hydrocellular dressings.
