Abstract

Blood transfusion is the transplant of a live tissue. At present it has become a commonly used treatment, but it carries risks and potential complications. Based on the availability in the hospital of a protocol for the administration of blood and RBC concentrations, a retrospective study was carried out with the aim of determining the compliance of nursing records with the transfusion procedures. Using probabilistic sampling, the medical histories of 100 patients were selected that were used to collect data regarding compliance at the time of filling out the nursing logs and other variables related to the transfusion and the characteristics of the patients. The results show incomplete logs in 42% of the analysed patients. The most frequently omitted information had to do with the lack of specific informed consent forms for the transfusion of hemoderivates, vital signs, time of start and finish of the transfusion and side effects. We conclude that it is necessary to improve compliance when filling out nursing logs to ensure a correct and safe clinical practice when administering blood transfusions. Strategies to improve the procedure are suggested.
