Abstract
The increase in the number of patients who seek medical attention at the Emergency Department or so called "frequentation rate" is an unquestionable sociological and healthcare phenomenon. The creation of triage areas is a way to organise urgent medical care depending on the objective severity of the condition. The process of classification or triage allows the nurse to determine, by means of a rapid assessment of the patient, what the healthcare priorities are in accordance with the severity of the condition so that the patient is assigned to the appropriate area. This papers presents the different priority levels with which we work in our emergency department as well as the role of the triage nurse, highlighting the importance of the initial nursing assessment as the fundamental axis upon which the entire process of urgent medical care is based.
