Abstract

Objective: to describe the level of sexual knowledge (puberty changes, menstruation, etc.) in a scholar population of 11-13 year olds in Madrid’s Arganzuela district.

Materials and method: transversal, descriptive study. To gather the pertinent data, all 6th grade students from every school in the Arganzuela district (southern Madrid) were asked to fill in a survey.

Results: 185 valid surveys were gathered (96 boys and 89 girls). Girls knew more about puberty changes (menstruation, acne, genital development) than boys. Erection and ejaculation concepts were known, respectively, by a 27.8% and a 14.4% of the boys. These percentages were considerably lower among the girls. The main source of information about sexuality was the family (36% of boys and 68.5% of girls), followed by information at the school (25.7% of boys and 31.4% of girls).

Conclusion: a high percentage of young adolescents have a very low level of knowledge about the physical changes they will endure, about the cause of these changes or about menstruation and other concepts. The main source of information about sexuality is the family.
