Abstract

The surgical treatment of patients diagnosed with carcinoma of the larynx consists of a total or partial laryngectomy. Following surgery, these patients receive enteral nutrition to favour internal healing. The feeding is administered via a nasogastric tube and is started within 24 to 36 hours after the operation and left in place for about two to three weeks, provided there are no complications. After these few weeks at the hospital, patients lose up to 7 to 8 kg of weight. This weight loss brings about the need to unify care criteria and improve the nutritional status of these patients during their hospital stay. The proposed protocol presents guidelines for the focused assessment of the nutritional status of the patient at the time of admission, indicating the most frequent nursing diagnoses and setting forth the nursing actions to be taken in the management of the patient. Once the protocol is put into practice, it will be evaluated. However, prior to this evaluation, there will be a better control of the nutritional status of the patient and an improvement in his or her education for self-care.
