Abstract

The objective of this work was to establish the relationship between alexithymia and work-related stress in nursing professionals. The study consisted of a sample of 240 registered nurses (216 women and 24 men) who worked in a hospital setting. The subjects responded to an anonymous questionnaire which contained besides certain sociodemographic variables such as gender, age, and the year of work experience, the Nursing Stress Scale (NSS) and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). Significant positive correlation coefficients were obtained between the total scores of the NSS and the TAS-20, and between the TAS-20 and the NSS factors denominated "professional relationships" and "intragroup communication". A moderate –although not significant– negative correlation was also found between the NSS scores and the years of work experience. The results confirm an association between alexithymic characteristics and the development of work-related stress in the nursing profession, especially in those aspects that entail team work and communication with work colleagues.
