Abstract

Spain is one of the countries with the largest number of organ donors per million inhabitants of the population per year. The process of donation and removal of the organs consists of several consecutive phases, including from the identification of the possible donor to the removal and distribution of the organs. The nursing professional is involved in the entire process. There are specialist nurses specifically trained to look after the family and relatives of the possible donor, to coordinate all the necessary paperwork for the transplant and to give the potential organ donor (POD) the necessary care to ensure that the viability of the grafts is the best possible for the recipients. The purpose of this paper is to review some fundamental concepts concerning organ donation, such as encephalic or "brain" death, the role of the transplant coordinator, and the objectives of the nursing care to be provided to both the donor and the family.
