Abstract

A relatively frequent activity in the care of the acute patient in the ICU is the intrahospital assisted transit of the patient to other areas to carry out diagnostic or therapeutic tests that cannot performed in their room. These transits put the patient at risk as they leave the safety of the unit.
Objetive: To identify if haemodynamic alterations occur as a result of the transit and to describe possible complications that may or might have occurred during such transportation to the diagnostic areas.

Methodology: Descriptive, cross-sectional study in a polyvalent ICU over a period of one year, of all patients subjected to in-hospital transit transportation. The variables under study (demographic, clinical, ventilator, pharmacological, and incidences) were recorded on a form design for that purpose during and after the transit. The t student test was used to compare quantitative variables for the paired data.
Results: 925 patients were admitted and 130 intrahospital transits performed for a total of 78 patients (46 with ventilator support and inotropes perfusion). The CAT scan room was the most common destination for the transit. Significant differences were found in arterial oxygen saturation and in systolic blood pressure. The recorded complications monomorphous ventricular were tachycardia in two patients, the loss of two central venous route catheters, the failures of the portable ventilator and a cardiac arrest with SVA.
Conclusion: The transit of critical patients does not appear to cause significant consequences on the majority of haemodynamic parameters; however, it is associated with decreased oxygen saturation in peripheral arterial blood and systolic blood pressure. Serious complications were resolved by the personnel in charge of the transit. The transit must be carried out by experienced personnel that know how to apply the necessary therapeutic measures to resolve any eventualities.
