Abstract
Objective: to identify and analyse the healthcare provided to children at the Emergency Department of the healthcare centre at the Ribeirão Petro/USP School of Medicine, Brasil.
Material and method: a descriptive study was carried out using the out-patient information system. The studied variables were: age, time of day, place of precedence, and reason for the consultation.
Results: 41% of the children were aged 1 to 4. 52% if the children were treated during late evening/night hours (17.00 to 7.00). 12% of the children came from other nearby districts that have their own emergency centre. With regard to the reasons to seek consultation, respiratory infections were the most frequently observed type of pathology (42.8%), followed by infectious conditions (24.6%)
Conclusion: the results obtained permit the adequateness to access, regionalisation, reorganisation of the agendas, re-arrangement of in-coming children flow and the articulation of the emergency service with the family health core centres.
