Abstract

The feet of diabetic patients are more prone than the rest of the population to sustain injuries and complications due to the combination of neuropathic and ischemic components and biomechanical and/or the morphological alteration that they might present.
It is quite common to observe in the diabetic foot complications associated with diabetes (vascular ulcers, cicatrisation deficit, ischemia, etc.) that largely diminish the quality of life of the affected subject, and that may even lead to the amputation of part of the involved limb.
Many of these problems can be avoided by means of adequate education on diabetes on the part of healthcare professionals.
This paper describes the importance of footwear, as of the main factors that can cause injuries and complications in the diabetic foot, which is often forgotten. The paper also analyses the characteristics that such footwear must meet so that it meets the requirements of a person with diabetes, whether or not deformities exist.
