Abstract

Objectives: To find out the level of basic knowledge on research and the degree of interest and involvement on the part of the nurses working in our hospital.
Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study in a sample of welfare nurses who took a self-administered test containing personal details, level of knowledge on research in the work setting, participation and degree of involvement in projects of scientific or formative interest.
Results: Of 240 surveys, 110 were completed (56,6% females / 43,4% males). The results showed a small percentage of individuals with knowledge on the methodology used in research (12,5%), and a high concordance (over 86%) on the need, utility and interest in nursing research. In general, individuals knew how to do get help on how to do research. 91,6% would do research on a project of their interest. Amongst the proposed subjects for their training, a review of the literature and how to publish manuscripts were considered most relevant. As subjects of interest the most important were the training in nursing, nursing care plan, and nursing logs and documentation.
Conclusions: A large majority recognised the importance of nursing research, which give us hope for continued progress in this line of professional development. To get a grip on the current state of the "investigating spirit" of our centre will enable us to put together strategies that improve their process and increases the quality of life of the work currently under way, proposing a mixed leadership as the most appropriate system.
