Abstract
Fostering the mobility of nursing professionals amongst the countries of the European Union (EU) could be an effective strategy to palliate the scarceness and apparent excess of nurses in some of these countries. An important limitation for this mobility consists in the lack of knowledge with regards to competences, training and practice of the nursing profession, as well as cultural differences among the different countries. At present there is no method or instrument enabling any possible comparison. The project of the European Healthcare Training and Accreditation Network (EHTAN) proposes an assessment methodology and self-evaluation of competences through an instrument elaborated to this end: the EHTAN questionnaire (CE). The present article presents a study on the validity and reliability of the EHTAN self-evaluation questionnaire on nursing competences. The CE questionnaire was elaborated based on a review of the literature and peer-panel discussions. The psychometric tests carried out, Cronbach’s alpha and the analysis of main components, suggest an acceptable degree of reliability, construct validity, and support the contents. Nurses are expected to be able to self-administer the CE in the future to assess their competences in relation to the competences expected in the recipient country so that employers may be able to identify possible differences.
