Abstract
The aim of this article is to analyse the importance of mental health care of those professionals who render their services in mental health, mainly the mental health nurse. This professional group runs the risk of developing the so called “burn out syndrome” a type of work-related stress. This article defines first the meaning of the term burn out and predisposing factors, together with the consequences for the person and his/her environment. Secondly, the relationship between burn out and nursing practice is analysed and then the relationship between burn out and the mental health nurse. Lastly, management strategies to cope with burnout are presented, both from an organisational as well as from a personal perspective.
