Abstract

In 1992, the American Academy of Paediatrics launched a campaign called Back to Sleep for the prevention of sudden infant death syndrome, with the recommendation of putting infants on their backs and face up for sleep. This recommendation has proven to be effective to prevent sudden infant death that has been reduced by a 40%. However, a negative consequence of this measure has generated a considerable increase in the number of cases of postural plagiocephaly or cranial deformity caused by posture.  The key for a favourable outcome of the infant with a positional head deformity is early diagnosis and treatment. Because of this, from the paediatrics office of the Gazalbide health centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz, it was decided to conduct a health education intervention with the aim of informing and training parents on the prevention of Postural Cranial Deformity (PCD) from the first 15 days of life of the infant until past the six months of life. For this purpose, a small brochure was developed with instructions to facilitate the work of the parents and to help them to become aware of the importance that these little daily actions have on their children. After one year of implementation of this work, the results show that, with few exceptions, the children followed up in that period of time from 0 to 1 year of age do not present significant signs of postural plagiocephaly.
