Abstract

Osteoporosis is a disorder with great physical and socioeconomic repercussion characterised by a decrease in bone density and quality. The bone weakens and becomes more fragile with a higher risk of sustaining fracture. This conditions is the main cause of bone fracture in postmenopausal women and in the elderly, which is associated to diminished quality of life.

Review of clinical practice guidelines, systematic reviews and clinical trials included in the international databases (Medline, EBM Guidelines, National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) Cochrane Library Plus, etc.) show that there are a large number of non-pharmacological factors that exert positive effects on bone density, as well as on the prevention of fractures in osteoporosis sufferers.

The purpose of this work is to increase the nursing knowledge on the meaning of osteoporosis, its risk factors, and the importance of a non-pharmacological treatment based on prevention, such as physical activity, nutrition and diet, healthy habits and postural hygiene or good body dynamics.

Osteoporosis can be prevented or at least slowed down, by identifying risk factors and carrying out prevention measures. The nursing professional, in his or her role of health educator, is the professional that is most suited to inform the population and promote such prevention measures.
