Abstract

Objective: to improve the knowledge of healthcare professionals on health prevention and promotion associated with breast cancer prevention and early diagnosis.

Method: assessment through a comparison of knowledge before and after an educational intervention. It was conducted at HUVN during October-November, 2013. The population object of the intervention were healthcare workers in the institution, over 20 years of age, and with any professional category. The variables analyzed were: age, gender, professional category, previous knowledge about risk factors for breast cancer, symptoms, detection methods, and information regarding self-examination. Intervention: three theoretical-practical workshops, with a duration of two hours, and a frequency of one every 15 days, on risk factors, healthy lifestyles, and breast self-examination.

Results: 106 professionals took part. Out of these, 45.9% were between 51 and 60-years-old; 95.6% were women, and 59.5% were Nursing Assistants. After the intervention, there has been an improvement in knowledge regarding detection methods, self-examination technique, when and how to conduct said technique and the most frequent location for breast cancer presentation (p < 0,01).

Conclusions: this educational intervention improves the level of knowledge among professionals, which presumably will encourage breast cancer prevention and/or early detection among this group, and will widen the healthcare education offered to those patients under their care.
