Abstract

Objective: to explore the association between body image and depression in >50-year-old people.
Method: narrative review. Databases consulted: Pubmed, Cuiden and Scielo. The review included studies published in English and associated with body image and depression in >50-year-old people.
Results: twenty-two (22) studies were identified as having objectives or hypotheses in terms of testing the potential association between body image and depression in older people. Out of these, eight were included, and four of them originated in England. In one of these articles, Parkinson’s Disease patients had a worse perception of their body image (p< 0.001) and presented a higher symptomatology of depression (p= 0.002) than the control arm. In another study, patients with obesity showed dissatisfaction with their body image that was significantly associated with depression (p< 0.001).
Conclusions: not enough evidence has been found regarding the association between the perception of body image and depression. Based on the reviewed literature, those changes in the body during the disease process, and the perception by patients of their own body image, do not imply a higher development of depressive symptoms than what they would present if these changes had not occurred.
