Objective: to learn the frequency of use of three types of negative pressure therapy (NPT), the type of wound where these have been applied, the wound location, the goal of treatment, the location of patients within the hospital during the NPT, and the complications that appeared in a private insurance company for occupational accidents.
Method: a descriptive transversal study of a series of cases with 28 patients undergoing one of the three types of NPT (simple, one-use, and complex). The study variables were: type of wound, wound location, hospital location, therapy goal, and complications.
Results: eight patients were treated with one-use NPT, 17 with simple NPT, and three with complex NPT. Regarding wound location, for all three NPTs the majority of patients had foot involvement. Regarding therapy goal, four patients (50%) with one-use NPT were healed without requiring operating room; 10 patients (58.8%) with simple NPT underwent a self-skin graft, and two patients (66.7%) with complex NPT underwent a self-skin graft. In terms of complications, three patients (17.7%) with simple NPT presented some complication.
Conclusions: the results obtained show that NPT is a very effective and safe tool for managing all types of wounds, also ensuring the preparation of the graft bed for conducting a skin flap or graft.
