Abstract

Objective: to understand the opinion of parents of 3-year-old boys and girls attending school for the first time about the need of having a school nurse present at the centre.
Method: a transversal study. Study subjects and setting: parents of 3-year-old pupils who started attending school in five public schools in the Community of Madrid. A 22-question questionnaire was prepared. Through the school tutor, a leaflet was sent to parents with information on the study and the questionnaire, that they could return once completed. A descriptive and bivariate analysis, conducted with 95% confidence levels.
Results: the participation was of 75%; 132 questionnaires were collected. There were 17% of children who presented chronic health problems; 65% of parents admitted that they took into account the presence of a school nurse when selecting the centre. Of the school pupils, 37% required medical care while they were in the centre; 18% of parents considered that their children’s health problem prevented them from being completely involved in school activities, and 68% of them stated that the school nurse profile could solve this problem. In the centres with a nurse, the percentage of 3-year-old schoolchildren with chronic health problems is superior vs. that in centres without a nurse, 22% vs. 11%. The percentage of children who required medical care in the centre is higher in those centres with a school nurse (41%) vs. those without a nurse (33%). Parents of children in centres with a school nurse assigned a higher score to the importance of medical care for health problems (p< 0.05), Health Education (p< 0.05) and training for teachers (p< 0.05) vs. those in centres without a nurse.
Conclusions: a relevant piece of data about the prevalence of chronic disease in 3-year-old schoolchildren (17%). A high percentage of parents state that they have chosen the school for their children because there was a school nurse. The opinion of parents regarding the presence of the school nurse in their children’s education centre is highly positive for medical care in health problems, Health Education, and training of the teaching staff.
