Abstract

Objective: to design a new tool for measuring overload in caregivers for dependent persons.
Method: a mixed-type research was conducted, combining qualitative and quantitative perspectives, through semi-structured interviews and the preparation of a mostly inductive analysis model for building the tool to assess caregiver overload. Data collection was conducted among professionals and informal caregivers from three Primary Care centres located at L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona) during the year 2016. A bibliographic review was conducted, as well as 18 semi-structured interviews with healthcare professionals and informal caregivers, selected through non-probabilistic sampling. Data analysis was conducted using an inductive analysis model. The tool generated was submitted to content validation, through a board of experts, by the Aggregated Individual Method.
Results: the tool included 16 items that measured the load objectively and subjectively. An 83% percentage was obtained as the total proportion of agreement between experts.
Conclusions: applicability in the home setting, and improvement in the assessment of overload in caregivers, in order to conduct an adequate intervention and achieve wellbeing for the caregiver and the dependent person.
