Abstract

Objectives: the purpose of this study was to determine the incidence rate of occupational accidents, as well as to classify them according to sociodemographical factors, and to describe the nature of the lesions among the staff from a district of the Primary Care health sector of the province of Malaga (Spain) during the period from 2005 to 2015.
Method: a descriptive cross-sectional retrospective study. Data were collected from the management system for occupational risk prevention of Andalucia. Study variables: age, gender, professional occupation, hospital unit, mechanism and type of lesion. Statistical treatment: descriptive statistics and bivariate analysis (X2 and Student’s t), with estimated odd ratios and 95% confidence intervals. In order to estimate the risk of accidents, the incidence rate was calculated.
Results: in total, 400 accidents were acknowledged; 73% of these (n= 292) caused work leave. The incidence rate was 24.2 cases per each 1,000 workers/year. Overall, 51.7% of the injured persons were in the 51-to-60-year old range. Women had twice the likelihood of suffering accidents than men (OR= 2.1; [CI95%]:1.64-2.37). The nursing profession had the highest frequency of accidents (42.2%).
Conclusions: occupational accidents present a pattern differentiated by age, gender and occupation. The typical victim profile was a 54-year-old nurse suffering musculoskeletal lesions by fall at the same level while moving around her work center, causing mild lesions, but generating a process of work leave due to the temporary disability caused by said accident.
