Abstract

It is widely known that diabetes can cause many problems at long-term, such as eye problems, loss of sensitivity, renal problems and, one of the most important, the development of ulcers in legs and feet that can lead to the amputation of these limbs. Limb amputation generates feelings of loss, sadness, social isolation and fear, and causes patient lives to be determined by restrictions and limitations. Some aspects are shown throughout the case, such as the role that professional nurses must play in the prevention and control of symptoms in these patients, and the need to provide the knowledge required in order to manage their condition in the best possible way. The need for reassessing the care approach is highlighted, particularly in the preventive setting. The objective of this article is to present the case report of a patient who has recently suffered an amputation due to complications from his Type 2 diabetes Mellitus. The nursing care plan is prepared, using the 11 functional patterns by Marjory Gordon, and guided by the NANDA-NIC-NOC taxonomies.
