Abstract

Objective: to assess the efficacy of an audiovisual intervention on treatment adherence for persons with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Likewise, to evaluate patient satisfaction with the intervention and the mental health centre where they are managed.
Method: a quasi-experimental before-after study conducted on Mental Health Units, the Psychiatry Day Hospital, and the Association of Mental Health Patients from A Coruña. Sample size: n= 63. Treatment adherence was measured through the Medication Adherence Rating Scale (MARS) for the psychoses questionnaire, before and one month after conducting an intervention with a 15-minute video designed ad hoc. Descriptive and bivariate statistical analyses were conducted (McNemar Test for paired data, t test for matched samples, Wilcoxon Test).
Results: sample n= 63. A modification was observed in the MARS scale score in 33 users, with the same proportion in male and female (p> 0.05). The overall mean of the MARS questionnaire results before and after the intervention was: = 7.41 (SD: 2.05) vs. = 7.66 (SD: 1.93); this difference was not statistically significant (p= 0.137). The video was evaluated as Useful or Very Useful by 98.4% of users. The overall satisfaction of patients with Mental Health Services was of 96.2%.
Conclusions: future research must confirm if psychoeducation through audiovisual materials is as effective as other methods; however, the good acceptance of the intervention shown by the results points at its potential usefulness in daily practice alongside other psychoeducational interventions.
