Abstract

Objective: to understand the attitude and motivation towards research among Nursing professionals working at a Hospital Emergency Unit.
Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted (March, 2017-January, 2018). The population were the nurses from the General Emergency Unit at the Complejo Hospitalario de Navarra. The survey validated by Cepeda Díaz was used, which includes 58 items: sociodemographic and occupational data (13 items); information regarding training, scientific output and opinion about research in Nursing (3 items); factors with impact on the attitude and motivation towards research (42 items). The questionnaire data were analyzed with SPSS statistical software.
Results: sixty (60) persons (44,78%) agreed to participate in the study, out of the 134 Nursing professionals who were working during that period at the General Emergency Unit of the Complejo Hospitalario de Navarra. There was a prevalence of women (n= 48; 80%), ≤ 30-year-old (n= 22; 36.7%), with >10-year seniority (n= 26; 43.4%), and with a master’s degree (n= 13; 21.7%). The opinion by respondents was that research contributes to professional development (n= 55; 91.7%), and allows to improve the quality of care (n= 52; 86.7%), though it requires plenty of time and effort (n= 39; 65%). The majority of respondents (94.73%) stated that during working hours there was no time to spend in a research project; 81% of respondents considered that they did not have the knowledge required to conduct a research project. However, 92,2% of them would be willing to collaborate in a research project.
Conclusion: the prevalent opinion among professionals was that research contributes to professional development, offers benefits to the professional nursing practice, and improves the recognition of the profession. However, they acknowledged that it is necessary to devote plenty of time and effort outside working hours in order to research.
