Abstract
Tuberculosis is a public health problem worldwide, mainly lung tuberculosis. The objective of this paper is to go over the most important aspects in the prevention and control of TB, aimed at the source (diagnostic tests, particularly the tuberculin test, sputum sample, drug therapy, primary and secondary chemoprophylaxis, compliance with the treatment, contact control, an strategy for concentric circles, epidemiologic surveillance, and health education in patients and contacts, as well as indications for respiratory isolation) as well as the transmission pathways (especially the airway) and the susceptible host (BCG vaccine and contact protection through the use of masks and personal respirators). The work of the nurse must encompass all the aspects of the epidemiologic chain, especially in what concerns the use of health education at all levels of TB prevention.
