Abstract
This review analyses the management and care of very low birth weight newborns with the aim of avoiding thermal stress during bath time, handling or additional exploratory manoeuvres, by using special techniques and care. The aim in low birth weight newborn management consists in maintaining the infant’s body temperature constant (normothermic infant: 36.5-37.5º C) in a thermo neutral setting, which is not possible just by monitoring axillary temperature. The article provides some practical guidelines for the nurse geared at how to ensure a thermoneutral setting and specifically how to avoid heat loss.
