Abstract
The purpose of this article is two-folded. It provides a historical compilation of what medicinal plants have been (especially, key points in terms of efficacy and safety of the studied plants) and presents a strategy that enables the healthcare professional in general and the nurse specifically, to be updated in phytotherapy that will allow the practice of the best scientifically based evidences. In the 18-issue series, a total of 30 products derived from medicinal plants were reviewed. Data extracted from the revision of the scientific evidence available on the efficacy, safety and popular use were exposed in summary following the same scheme always (introduction, scientific evidence, efficacy, safety and interactions and conclusions).
