Abstract

Home care of immobilised patients requires the organisation and planning of specific social and healthcare services, and thus it becomes important to determine the prevalence of this need in our population.
Objective: to estimate the prevalence of immobilised patients over 65 in the health district 5 of the Community of Madrid. Design: descriptive cross-sectional study.Material and methods: probabilistic and stratified sampling per team of primary care. Data collection through the review of medical histories and/or telephone interview.
Results: information was collected on 2,105 users (57% women and 43% men). The prevalence of immobilised patients was 7,7% (CI 95%: 6,5%-8,8%), being the immobilisation condition of the patients known to the healthcare professionals in 91% of cases. Mean patient age was 75,4 years (SD 7,3), immobilised patients were older than non-immobilised patients (84 and 75 years of age, respectively, p<0,001).
Conclusions: the prevalence of immobilisation prevalence in patients over 65 years of age in health district 5 is lower than that currently managed (11%), a fact that is also perceived by our community care professionals. Even though these data cannot be extrapolated directly to all the health care districts of the Community of Madrid, they could be well used to estimate such prevalence in other health areas with an age distribution similar to ours.
