Abstract

In the course of the last few years, technological advances have modified prenatal care. The possibility to run tests have made it possible for the prenatal diagnosis of congenital defects to become an objective in prenatal care. Ronal Dworkin defends the principle of procreative autonomy, which means that all decisions that affect their reproduction are the individual’s own and fundamental choice. However, decisions made in the procreative setting are circumscribed to the framework of a healthcare relationship that is established over time. This article attempts to perform a brief review of the philosophical principles that constitute the foundations of the principle of autonomy, and then goes on to make a reflection on the application of these autonomy concept into decision-making in the area of interest: prenatal diagnosis of congenital anomalies.
