Intra-Abdominal Pressure (IAP) measurement has started to be an additional parameter in the standard of care of patients who have undergone highrisk abdominal surgery.
IAPs values are a good predictor of the patient's status during the immediate and late postoperative period, as increased values are associated with worse prognosis.
This article reviews the physiopathology of IAP and the characteristics of possible measurement methods. It also describes the procedure used by the nurse to determine IAP by using the most widely used method which involves the measurement of intravesical pressure with a closed system, as compared to other methods, due to the fewer complications of lower cost of the method described.
