Abstract

Schizophrenia is a serious, chronic and one of the most debilitating mental diseases. Families often feel overwhelmed and lonely and can even feel so drained that they may claudicate care. All experiences demonstrate that psychological education is one more factor in the prevention of relapses. 84% of patients with schizophrenia live with their relatives. It is the responsibility of healthcare professionals to help these patients’ main carers.
This work depicts an experience in psychological education carried out since 2002 to the present time, by nurses in a short-stay psychiatric hospitalisation unit during the patient´s admission.
In most cases, continuity of care was achieved among the different system levels. In all cases, such intervention increased the level of knowledge and degree of commitment of the carer.
