Title:

Professional self-steam in the scope of geriatric care

Abstract:

Objective: to determine the self-steam of a group of nursing professionals (nurse's aides and registered nurses) working in a public nursing home in our community.
Material and methods: a descriptive study was carried out on 26 nursing professionals working at the Llar de Calvía nursing home with 66 in-residents. The García Monge self-steam self-administered evaluation test was used to measure self-steam. This test measures three dimensions: I, the ideal one, I the real one, and I, the real one, through the eyes of others.
Results: twenty-five nursing professionals were studied. Higher scores were achieved for the "I, the ideal one". When the "I, the real one" was compared against the "I, the Ideal one" some statistically significant differences were found. The same occurred when the "I, the real one, through the eyes of others" was compared against "I, the ideal one".
Conclusions: the results point towards the existence of low levels of self-steam in these professionals that could be related to low levels of work-related satisfaction. Lastly, the need to intervene at different levels is addressed: pregraduate training, postgraduate training and training at a organizational level.
