Abstract

Introduction. Acute compartment syndrome after coronary angiography using radial access is a rare complication with an incidence between 0.004% and 0.013%. The evolution of compartment syndrome can have serious consequences if it is not treated urgently. The objective of this article is to highlight a rare complication of a very common procedure such as cardiac catheterization.
Material and method. A nursing assessment is carried out following the Virginia Henderson 14 needs model at the time of admission and a care plan is drawn up using the NANDA-NOC-NIC taxonomy with outcome and activity indicators.
Results. We highlight the diagnoses: risk of shock, acute pain, anxiety, deterioration of tissue integrity, deterioration of physical mobility and risk of peripheral neurovascular dysfunction.
Discussion. The progression of bleeding at the radial access site after cardiac catheterization to compartment syndrome is a rare and infrequent complication. It is important to detect it quickly to prevent it from evolving and causing permanent damage to the area. We consider it necessary for nurses to recognize the less frequent vascular complications such as acute compartment syndrome.
Carrying out this care plan could be useful for nurses working in the field of cardiology where catheterizations are part of the day-to-day workload but who may never have encountered this complication.
