    Abstract

    Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia. The most serious complication is stroke, however, there are other problems associated with the need for oral anticoagulant drugs. Percutaneous left atrial appendage occlusion is an alternative for these patients: especially for those who have a previous history of stroke or recurrent bleeding as a consequence of the administration of oral anticoagulants.

    Chronic atrial fibrillation is usually associated with the development of thrombi in the appendage located in the left atrium of the heart. Interventional treatment is indicated after dissolving the clot via pharmacological treatment. If the clot remains, the percutaneous occlusion procedure carries an associated risk, with greater possibilities of cerebrovascular damage or stroke. To prevent a stroke peri-procedure, several cerebral protection devices have been designed.

    A clinical case is described of a patient, with atrial fibrillation and a history of gastrointestinal bleeding, who underwent elective left atrial appendage occlusion surgery. To reduce the associated risks, the use of the cerebral protection device TriGUARD 3 was proposed. An individualized nursing care plan was established according to the NANDA-NOC-NIC taxonomy.
