    Abstract

Introduction. Heart rate is the number of heart contractions per unit of time, the objective was to describe the current scientific evidence available.

Method. A systematic review was carried out by searching for scientific evidence in databases and using descriptors in health sciences, the following search protocol was established: “Heart rate” OR “Determination of heart rate”, the criteria used were: temporality, language, and complete texts, for the search and extraction process the elements for systematic reviews were considered and the level of evidence and degree of recommendation were determined.

Results. After the critical reading of 29 articles, it was identified that 31 % were reviews with a level of evidence 2++ and recommendation grade B, 31 %, followed by experimental studies 17 %, randomized clinical trials and analytical studies 10 %. For the analysis and presentation of the evidence, three topic groups were formed: heart rate at rest, heart rate variability, and determination of heart rate using the innovation in new methods for its measurement.

Conclusion. The theoretical gap lies in the lack of experimental studies and in the disciplinary area of nursing. The evidence indicates that heart rate is a predictive indicator of the occurrence of coronary events, stroke, and sudden death, so this phenomenon should be further explored, and a clinical practice guideline should be created to strengthen its measurement and assessment.
