Abstract

This paper deals with the care and support given by family members, especially grandmothers who take on the responsibility of bringing up and caring for their grandchildren, adopting substitute parental roles. We have called this population “grandmother nannies” because it is them, the grandmothers, and not the grandfathers, who have been identified as the main carers of their grandchildren.

The approach chosen as reference studies the subjects within their development context, based on the perception they have of their lives and setting, taking into account individual, relational, sociocultural and personal factors on their health, understanding such as influencing factors.

The main objective of our study is to evaluate the influence and degree of involvement that these factors have on the health of the study group (grandmother nannies) in order to care and informally look after their grandchildren.

The paper is structured in a theoretical introduction, describing:

  • History of familial care provision
  • Relation of the care provided with the gender
  • Modern working women
  • Modern grandmothers; health status, socioeconomic situation, family situation
  • Personal implication in the care provided

The following methodological point describes the sample, the instruments and the procedure to be followed for data collection. Lastly, and after analysing and comparing the results against the documentation found, we set forth the limitations and conclusions reached in the study.
