Abstract

The scientific and technological development reached in recent years in developed countries and the therapeutic possibilities prompted by these advances can make us lose perspective of the fact that these therapeutic tools which are so common nowadays were unthinkable a few years ago.

The first cardiac transplant performed nearly forty years ago paved the way for the standardisation of a surgical procedure for a given number of patients for whom there is no other therapeutic alternative.

Nowadays, professionals who were pioneers in the application of this treatment are now retired. Through this compilation of data, and presented as a historical account, it is our wish to pay a tribute to these professionals for the future vision and insight they had and for the difficulties they had to overcome.
