Abstract

The decoration of the skin has been considered an art throughout history. Nowadays, piercing has become a social ritual with growing popularity in the Western world, especially among young people.

The importance for healthcare professionals to be familiar with perforation techniques, care, and complications and contraindications of piercing have become very relevant in emergency situations, where a good knowledge and understanding in piercing removal and maintenance of the perforation is vital.

The need for adequate self-care of the perforation site and the aseptic technique employed during the actual piercing is highlighted by the large amount of complications that can result from these techniques, many of which develop at a later stage. Hygiene is fundamental, both during the actual procedure as well as after the piercing is in place. Excessive manipulation is also to be avoided to prevent infections. Wound care must be rigorous and constant until good healing is achieved.
A good way to prevent complications is to have a good understanding of the post-procedural care to be administered as well as a good understanding of the complications and contraindications that might develop. To achieve this it is advisable to get information from the actual shop where the piercing is done according to current legislation in effect in the “Comunidad de Madrid” (local government of the Madrid area).
