Abstract

A descriptive analysis of a case series was carried out in which the universe was composed of 175 elderly subjects from consultation suites 17 and 18 of the Policlínico Cristino Naranjo Vázquez health district, in the province of Holguín between 2005 and 2007. The sample included 100 elderlies who underwent an interview prior informed consent based on the following categories: most frequent manifestations of maltreatment, reactions and behaviours adopted by the elderly to protect themselves against the violent act. At present, research on the elderly is boosting. The state is also playing an active role in promoting a healthy life style for the protection of our elderly. Psychological violence towards the elderly occurs nearly in all homes in our country. The purpose of this study was to gain further insight into the psychological violence towards the elderly on the part of the family.
Our study was composed predominantly by females, with those aged 60 to 69 being the most maltreated group. The most common manifestations are: bad manners when answering their questions, usage of offending rude words when answering their questions and use of offensive body language. The most commonly found reactions were: emotional distress, sorrow, and sadness in all cases. The behaviour or protective mechanisms adopted by the elderly was silence, acceptance and isolation. The elderly are psychologically mistreated by their children.
It was recommended to prepare the young and adult population of today reminding them that they will be elderly of tomorrow so that these people adopt positive attitudes towards life and towards the natural process they are and will be faced with.
