Abstract
This paper aims to determine the main nursing diagnoses in geriatric patients. A study was carried out on the first 50 patients admitted in 2007 in the Acute Care Unit at the Hospital Virgen del Valle of Toledo. M. Gordon’s functional health patterns were used for assessment, which enabled us to obtain nursing diagnoses through the application of NANDA taxonomy II. The work presented herein reflects the immense amount of nursing diagnoses we deal with in our day-to-day practice. We consider this paper to be a useful instrument to become aware of the real degree of care that geriatric patients require. The results of the study, according to the amount of diagnoses in each patterns follows the following order: nutritional-metabolic, activity-exercise, elimination, cognitive-perceptual, perception of health management, self-perception and role-relationships.
