Abstract

A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out aimed at assessing the response to tuberculin (PPD) in first, second and third year nursing students at the start of the 2007/2008 academic year at the Nursing School in Lanzarote. This study was motivated by the current increased observed in the incidence of tuberculosis (TB) and the detection of some cases amongst the students in 2007.
The simple consisted of 72 students that volunteered to have the test done following an informative talk on the reasons for the study and after being fully informed of the disease tuberculosis.

Tuberculin was evaluated 72 hours after hypodermal injection of 2 UT of PPD, RT-23, with a short 27G /8 needle. Response to tuberculin compared overall showed significant differences amongst the three years of nursing studies. It is worth mentioning that the greatest percentage of induration was seen in second year students, being, a priori, the third year students the ones most exposed.
