Abstract

Changes in the healthcare system in these last decades have made it necessary to review the curricular content of healthcare careers, bringing the global and multi-social society we live in and health inequities with respect to gender into this review.

Incorporating this gender perspective into nursing training of both males and females and into the training of obstetrical & gynaecological specialist nurses (midwives) is based on different publications that bring to light the differences in the way men and women develop diseases and die. These differences demonstrate a need to adequately treat the health of men and women, taking into account among other factors, unfair or avoidable social determinants and inequalities that must subjected to the judgement of the corresponding authorities.

The above thus explains the need to determine health differences between the sexes and the need to include the gender as a health determinant. The perspective of gender should be incorporated into the training of healthcare professionals, as this knowledge will permit to adequately approach the health of men and women.
