Abstract
Primary care activities include: prevention, promotion, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. Even though we, healthcare professionals, focus our practice on the last three points, prevention and promotion of health are more often than not included in our work.
In our primary care centre there is a dentist, a family doctor, and nurses. We select subjects over the age of 70 who wear dentures or dental prostheses. We have detected a need to assess the condition of oral and dental health, including the condition of any prostheses in this sector of the population.
Based on the need detected, it was decided to set up a health education programme, being the nurse one of the fundamental pillars within the multidisciplinary team. It is thus confirmed that health education is a fundamental tool to motivate patients for better care and prevention of their oral and dental health.
