Abstract

Anthropology analyzes the act of feeding as part of the cultural systems, which is why we have decided to start with breastfeeding and the iconographic models that the Virgins of the Milk have shown. We aim to relate breastfeeding as part of the act of feeding with the sociocultural factors that have an effect on it: gender, religion, social status, economy or politics. Based on the fields studied, we will show that models emerge so that society can imitate them with a specific objective, as part of the education process. The results obtained show that religious images have promoted breastfeeding but history reveals that high-class women have often assigned this function to wet nurses.
