Abstract

In order to improve nursing care in patients with deteriorated tissue integrity, nurses must be able to identify infected wounds, with the help of clear guidelines and algorithms.
This article presents the results obtained in a recent delphi study designed to identify the clinical signs of infection in six types of wounds (acute wounds, arterial ulcers, venous ulcers, pressure ulcers, burns and diabetic foot).
A key aspect to take into account in this study is the fact that despite common criteria, each type of wound can present different clinical signs of infection.
The document should be an excellent resource for nurses involved in the management and treatment of wounds, as well as a very useful teaching aid to educate nursing staff on wound infection.
